After doing this lab, it helped reason out reasons why the chickens were dying. It was because of other predators in the neighborhood such as cats, raccoons, and hawks killing them. Also some could have wandered off at night, not knowing where to go. To fix this problem, my plan was to install a 10ft barbed wire surrounding the area so the chickens weren’t able to get wandered off. It made it so that they were constrained in the area. Also I decided on 8ft because i’ve noticed that my chickens try to jump and fly often so after looking up the average height a chicken could fly (6ft) that’s why i made it that tall. The brick surrounding the area was for the chicken to not be able to dig holes and escape the barrier. Lastly locking them up at night was part of the plan too for that the chickens could be extra safe during the night time when we couldn’t watch over them. At the beginning of the experiment I started off with 17 chickens, on the third day it went down to 15 due to the fact there was a hole in the barbed wire that the chickens squeezed through but fixed that after finding out. It went down to 14 chickens on the 9th day because in the morning when letting them out, it turns out we forgot to gather all of them in. The chicken died from a natural death though, it was not because of predator, it was just getting old. Overall this experiment has shown to be very helpful in keeping my chickens safe.
